Caring for Mid-Century Classics

CRATE Interiors was one of the first furnishings resources to import and design with authentic Mid Century classics in the Bay of Banderas.

We were early enthusiasts of this style, over the years expanding our offering to include high quality authorized reproductions for homebuyers interested in kitting their cutting edge contemporary resort properties with modern, collectible furniture. Back in 2008-2010 when the CRATE Interiors furnishings solution was first launched in the Puerto Vallarta area, we partnered with award-winning architects and engineers from leading edge properties like Avalon, Paramount Bay, Rio Amapas Villas and others to offer these iconic pieces to discerning buyers. Today owners still enjoy these pieces over 12 years later.

Having stood the test of time over many decades, Mid Century designs are easily adapted and reimagined for resort climates and are excellent choices for high end vacation residences, rental properties and real estate investments along the coast.

DESIGN ORIGINAL OR DUPE?

Knowing your authentic classics from your productions is important too.  Original pieces manufactured in the 1930s-50s, along with their authorized new counterparts are often double the price or higher compared to modern reproductions. To create these less costly versions, changes are made to the manufacturing process and the materials to offer them at a lower price.

PRODUCT CARE:

Caring for these collectibles is easy with the property knowledge and materials.  Most often these pieces are made from solid exotic woods such as walnut, elm, rubberwood, acacia and teak.

  • Wood seats, backrests and arms are most often manufactured with a finishing coat of sealer or lacquer. This will protect the furniture from most spills and stains. Maintaining the furniture by reapplying these types of protectives coats is advisable every few years.

  • Fabric seats and upholstery can be Scotchguarded for longterm durability, easy cleaning and protection from spills, stains and mould.

  • Natural materials like cane, bamboo, paper rush, twisted jute can be sealed with soap flakes, wax, a variety of oils and can last from 5 to 50 years depending on the wear and care. Manufacturers typically use sealants like shellac or linseed oil which do not need to be removed prior to at-home sealing. Since these are natural fibers created from a diverse mix of materials, it’s best to apply these sealant products prior to wiping or cleaning with any liquid or water.

While silicon products, even Scotchguard, dish soap and foaming cleaners are perfectly suitable for most Mid Century fabrics textures and upholstery (especially those with a higher percentage of synthetic and polyester fibers), they are not recommended on natural fibers and woven seat panels. If stains are severe in these areas, denatured alcohol is a better option.

OUR PRO TIPS:

Our design team favors natural products like orange and lavender oil plus soy wax which also serve as insect repellents in  tropical climates.  Wood legs, arm rests and seats must be covered, taped off and protected prior to applying these solvents if there’s any risk of discoloration.

However, natural patina is part of the appeal and value of these time-honored classics and over the years they may darken with use and time. Every dinner party, celebration or family feast is literally woven into the fiber of these beautiful classics, preserving all the moments in your hearth and home.
